In light of Harley's less-than-logical redesign, she is the new theme to re-open SHCC!

I don't think there will be an specific idea to follow in redesigning her...I'm pretty sure ANYTHING is better than the redesign she was given, so have fun with it and do anything you want! I think she is a character that will be easy to explore and recreate with an imaginative twist.

-Aquagent, the Aquaman of Victorian England! I love Aquaman and I figured the easiest way to make him seem more formidable was to take him back to a time before man could fly, when the waterways and trade routes were extremely important and constantly under siege by pirates and bandits and what have you. Aquagent protects the ships on the oceans as well as guarding the lost city of Atlantis--a drowned city rich in treasure and destructive magics--from his half brother, the rogue admiral Ocean Master, and the mad-inventor turned deep sea plunderer Black Manta. I spent way too much time thinking this out.

Born to the king of Atlantis and a polynesian mother the young aquaman spent his early childhood beneath the surface in Atlantis. Then a freak tragedy orchestrated by an enemy of the royal family wrecked h is home and separated him from his family. Stranded, he floated to the surface and found himself among his mother's family who recognized him and took him in. As he grew people were a bit weary of the pale skin he inherited from his Atlantean father but the young Aquaman proved to be a formidable warrior among his people and as an adult seeks to overthrow the usurper in his kingdom beneath the waves while he balances living in the surface and undersea worlds.

February-March Crossover Theme!

As you may have heard over at Project Rooftop, we are participating in a giant crossover with Whitechapel, PR and Superhero of the Month for February up until March!

The character of choice is Aquaman and the theme that Superhero Coco will be using for this challenge will be to design Aquaman in the combination of a different culture and different time. For example, you could end up with Nazi Aquaman, African tribal Aquaman, American pride Aquaman, Mesoamerican Aquaman, etc...be creative, have fun, and you have plenty of time to submit!

Basically, Imagine how a superhero movie would be have been made during any decade before the 60's. For example, How would have __________'s costume been made in the _________'s, How would they have done the effects, who would have played__________. She is a sorceress with magical powers and a talent for prophecy who favour knight errant Amadis de Gaula Also is appeared in Don Quixote as secondary character.

She was a witch and her name sound like the name of Scarlett Witch, (I know it´s a terrible joke)

Whitney Hubbard's Scarlet Witch:

I went with Medea as my literary inspiration. I picked the character Medea because both she and the Scarlet Witch had these really tragic stories involving their children being killed. Medea actually killed her own children as revenge against her husband Jason, and depending on the verison of the story you read, she may or may not have fed them to Jason too. Which is disgusting.

Alex Getts' Scarlet Witch:

The first thing I thought of when I read the "literature" theme was Breakfast at Tiffany's. Of course, I think the film is more well-known than the novella, so I used Audrey Hepburn as my template when redesigning the Scarlet Witch as a Holly Golightly-esque figure, switching the trademark black for the Witch's signature color.

Matt Ryan's Nightwing

I love Matt Ryan's Nightwing, especially his creative backstory.

After a long stint as the drummer for the hardcore death-metal band Dynamic Duo, Dick Grayson now tours with the Titans. The Titans, as you may recall, include Wally West on electric guitar, Raven on tambourine and Koriand'r on lead vocals. Garth Jackson Hyde replaced Roy Harper on bass and back-up vocals, during his long battle with heroine addiction. Victor Stone, though not an official member of the group, has worked on several collaborations with the Titans in the past, and is rumored to be featured in the Titan's next album titled "You Suck, Dan DiDio Please Stop Killing Us Off."

"This next one's for Barbara...." Richard Grayson, performing live all this week at the Nightwing Lounge, Gotham City's premiere blues club! Really, this is a guy at a piano, save that the glasses have a modified version of his Nightwing (3rd costume) logo. Also, he's smiling a little, as Grayson is eternally optimistic, compared to his mentor, concert pianist Bruce Waynovitsky. Pardon the sketch; no time to ink or scan properly.

My design is Nightwing as a member of a mid 1960's Mod band. I think of them more similar to the Who, or The Kinks, rather than the Byrds or the Monkees.
I tried to combine Nightwing's whole costume history in the design, the tie represents the yellow wing pattern that was on his first two costumes, and the blue tones are also there to reflect that. I decided to go with a grayish purple rather than black for the jacket because the black really washed out the details.
For the Robins I decided to try and represent versions of their different costumes.
I also tried to embody the different personalities in each outfit, Damian was given an edwardian Arthur Rimbaud like style, the green is a lot more subtle.
And Jason's outfit looks kind of like he's trying really hard to be cool, and not pulling it off as well.

Jeremy Todd's Nightwing:

The idea was kind of a Jimi Hendrix-esque look for Nigthwing. I was trying to brainstorm what kind of look from class rock would work for Nightwing and came across a picture of Hendrix in this Hussar's jacket. I thought all the piping would make a nice parallel to his 70s look and allow for a big collar. The western shirt kind of continues the look. And the guitar strap pays tribute to the Robin/Batman utility belt.

What is SHCC?

I've gotten a few e-mails referring to what we do here at SHCC as a contest. It isn't, just to clarify. Anyone and everyone is welcome, and no one wins some splendid prize for the "best ever _____". It's just a way to network, share ideas, and enjoy each others artwork, creativity and love of all things superhero related.

There is indeed a core group of us from the Memphis College of Art that tend to contribute every time (more or less) and that I consider regulars, but there are also regulars NOT from MCA, people that I've never met.

It's not a contest, or an exclusive club...just draw, submit and enjoy!

ALSO to address a point brought up by a submitter, entries MUST be drawn by YOU. No tracing, generators or coloring line art drawn by someone else.

I hope this clears some things up and that I will get to see many entries from everyone, and many new faces in the coming months!

Not knowing much about the character, I decided to redesign Nova's suite to be more of a space/ survival suite and less like painted on spandex. As for the cultural theme portion of the challenge, I wanted to do a homage to Atlas in Greek Mythology with out being too obvious.

We both wanted to do a Baphomet inpired Nova, so we worked together to make this guy. Justin designed him, I (Kayla) drew him, Justin inked him, and I colored him and overlaid some Baphomet imagery.

I can't find a whole lotta justification for the sword and the wings, but I think they look awesome. I wanted him to appear like an archangel, or someone that would have been interpreted as one.

Pete Taylor's Nova:

I read about the Nova mythological designs and had an idea for a Norse Nova but somewhere along the way I forgot it had to be mythological and changed my design to a WW1 version! I think it was a doodle of a Nova-style flying helmet that did it.

Mayon Maxey's Nova:

Here is my submission for your Nova Redesign, Mythological version. I decided to recreate Nova as a Mayan superhero. My attempt to show a connection to the modern day Nova includes him having large feathers in place of the star on the front of his helmet. He also has three Mayan versions of the sun wrapped around his neck. Hope you enjoy.

I thought an Egyptian theme would suit the character pretty well. The gold and blue color scheme was pretty easy to transfer over. And the fact that Ra's head was that of a falcon fit well with Nova's crazy helmet. Had fun coming up with this. Hopefully I'll be able to work on the coloring and add a background later.

Here's my Nova redesign put through an Ancient Egyptian filter. Lots of fun experimenting with hand drawn layers of texture.

Erik M. Held's Nova:

Hail Rikadu son of Ryadem, blessed of Shamash, God of Justice and the Sun! The basic interpretation is through Babylonian/Assyrian mythology (BabyloNova!). Shamash needs a hero and chooses Rikadu as his defender of Law (remember, Shamash gave Hammurabi his Code). He grants him a sword, shield (that, as pictured strapped to his back, manifests wings of a mighty eagle) and other articles of power. Shamash also gets his father Sin, God of the Moon and Wisdom to bless Rikadu with great knowledge, as well as the Wisdom to wield his Sword of Justice (notice the crescent moons on helm and hilt); Ishtar, sister of Shamash and Goddess of Love, War and Fertility, gives him her Spear of Beautiful Victory, which can pierce any foe's armor and heal any ally's wound. The three symbols on his chest (and elsewhere) are the ancient seals of these gods.

Nova!

This time, back by popular demand, he will be themed. Your job is to take Nova and interpret him through a culture's mythology. You could, for example, interpret him through Greek mythology and treat him like Apollo. (BUT, any culture can be used.)

Since he is basically (from my understanding of Alex's explanation of him) a friggin' sun and fights evil planets or something, he should fit into a mythological context pretty easily!

Shane McDermott's Storm

One more storm, this time from Shane McDermott!

I didn't know much about Storm so I did a little research and learned that she and her mother are from a long line of African witch-priestesses with white hair. She spent part of her childhood in Cairo, lost her parents there and even spent time as a thief before joining the X-Men. Or something like that. It was fun to hunt for images of African priestesses and trinkets that she might have picked up and held onto during her days as a thief in Cairo.

I wanted to play with the idea of her being able to manipulate the weather of her immediate surroundings, so I tried to draw her as a composer/puppeteer type of figure.

Rudy Jordan's Storm:

This is Mizz 'Ro, queen of the meteorological system of planet Earth and the imaginary 1st world African country of Wakanda. This design is the antithesis of Storm's current AXM look (not AXM:Xenogenesis, that look's great), where she's being portrayed as a Tina Turner (circa Thunderdome)-impersonating, drag-queen/bag lady who feels the need to wear everything in her wardrobe all at the same time. I wanted her to have the sleek silhouette she sported during her biker punk heyday, that's why she doesn't have a cape. The lower half of the costume harks back to her silver Jim Lee jump suit and the top half to her legendary Dave Cockrum black leather bathing suit with peekaboo holes.

Storm: Ororo in a casual everyday outfit. I wanted to pay tribute to the classic X-men uniform hence the yellow and black color scheme. Also it may to small to see but in addition to the X on her head band the buttons on her scarf and shirt as well as the straps on her shoes also have X's on them.

Kayla Cline's Storm:

I decided to just try and interpret her in my style. The arm is pretty straight and weird, I know, but I like it. It's kind of sloppy and unfinished because I was trying out inking with this new brush...I gave her an iguana because I based her a little on my roommate, Angel. There's a hurricane viewed from a satellite overlayed on top of her.

Erik M. Held's Storm:

Prof. O. Munroe, the Weather Mistress: Donning her vortex pack, Munroe becomes a defender of her people against the threat of the gentlemanly villains, the Stormlords. The contraption sucks in weather, breaks it apart into light, wind and water particulates (19th century science!) and redirects it accordingly to 1) the Lightning Gun, 2) wind cannons/propulsion packs, 3) optilights, 4) anti-personnel vents, 5) shock stick and a few other odds and ends. All controlled by a few cranks,a switch and the steam regulatrix. She can even reconfigure the apparatus to briefly contol a local weather system. Is there nothing copper pipe and SCIENCE can't do??

This is a younger happy version of Skeletor before someone bullied and hurt his beloved kitty and turned him into the evil villain we know him to be now.

For my take on skeletor, I tried to make him a bit more menacing without straying too far from the things about his current design that make him iconic. I thought it would be cool to make his design a bit more like a mummy with armor.

Skeletor's floppy purple hood reminds me of those obnoxious American Apparel hoodies Hi-Tone hipsters wear, so that's what I turned him into.

I set out to make Skeletor and company as adorable as humanly possible. Redesigning him as a toddler clad in footsie pajamas with Panthor cub may have been overkill, though.
Decided to counterbalance the cute with some Havoc Rattle inflicted He-man violence. Failed miserably.

I give you Skele-tor, the witchdoctor from Eternia's past. He is a "regular" Eternian, but prehistoric compared to Prince Adam, Teela and the like. His fel sorceries - and the hand of another - have sent him hurtling through time to the "present," a veritable hi-tech utopia under King Randor, sixth of his name (to see his arrival, read the attached "Bone-Man." I couldn't help myself; I had to write it). He quickly proves himself a great threat through his black arts and determination to overthrow Randor's decadence and machinery. His is a danger that only be countered by summoning and ancient warrior's spirit into a living vessel....

I decided to abandon the skull-for-a-head and instead we have paint mimicking the look of a skull. The feather necklace approximates old Skeletor's shoulder garb. Dangling from a leather cord you have a large, pierced eyeball with a bone above it, much like the original's chest symbol. The leather "skirt" pieces have bones stitched through and more eyeballs sewn on for effect. Feathers on the shins hint at his old boots. You can't go wrong with a ram's skull on a giant mammal bone as a talisman of power.

Shane McDermott's biker Skeletor:

Skeletor as envisioned as a Road Sorcerer who dispenses evil on his Panthor cycle. His skull is the result of a serious case of road rash. I originally planned on making the bike black and dressing him in various shades and textures of black and gray, but ultimately, the original color scheme won. Good times.

Here are the Daredevils I received! I have to say, I'm pretty impressed with the turnout, and I'm sure you will be too. Everyone should be really proud of their work this time. Unfortunately, I didn't receive every DD I expected to (I saw a few in-process that weren't sent in on time), if I get those within the next few days I can tack them onto the end of this post.

Marie Provence's Caveman DD:

She adds: "Here's my Daredevil. I have to confess, I'm not much of a super hero follower so this guy was fairly new to me. However, I liked this description of him:
"Matt Murdock is blinded by a radioactive substance that falls from an oncoming vehicle. Despite not being able to see anymore, the radioactive exposure heightens his remaining senses beyond normal human ability."

So I ran with the idea of blindness and dwelling in a cave. I liked the idea of camouflage in the cave surroundings, so his coloration and his horns kind of resemble the stalagmites on the floor of the cave. I also nabbed his posture from other images of the original Marvel Daredevil."

He adds: "After going through a bunch of thumbnails for different periods, I settled on Renaissance era Venice for my Daredevil makeover."

He adds: "In Ireland at the early part of the 1700's, English Rule over Ireland dictated that all Catholics must convert to the protestant faith or face execution. The majority of the Catholic churches were destroyed and many of the Catholics that chose to resist conversion were forced to flee. The English went so far as to hire... Priest Hunters to track and kill the Priests that resisted conversion. Some Priests chose to hold Catholic masses in the woods, cloaking themselves in order to not be outed. I re-imagined daredevil as a priest during this time. I wanted to make him look more devilish and beast-like while retaining an accurate depiction to the garb of the times. I imagined him as a priest that felt that what the English were doing was working against God. So he fights for his congregation dressed as the devil, a martyr to the godlessness and the sinful nature of the killings of his people. so um yeah....these are the sketches."

He adds: "I liked the idea of Matt Murdock having a scrappy seeing eye dog. This would lend him such devastating moves as, " SEEING EYE DOG PUNCH!" or, "SEEING EYE DOG LIVING SHIELD". I decided to go with plain clothes design because everyone knows Matt Murdock is DareDevil now anyway, regardless of Danny Rand's attempts to fool the public. So, if Matt is a lawyer and the crime fighter DD, why not stream line things and have a battle-business suite, appropriately colored, with reasonable everyday items used as weapons?"

Elliot Boyette's DD Knight:

He adds:"I decided to do a Knights Templar version of Daredevil where upon learning he has been doing the work of the devil in the Crusades he curses God and thinks him wrong. God answers by blinding him for his arrogance but in an ironic twist of fate he accepts a deal from Satan where he gains demonic powers/abilities to be able to fight for the Holy Land while promising his soul to Hell as a sacrifice."

I think everyone will agree that the turnout this time was great, and I think i'll continue to have superhero designs submitted every two weeks. And to any readers/lurkers who are curious, you are VERY welcome to submit at any time!

Due to the intended broad subject matter of the next redesign, I'm going to go ahead and announce this one early to give people a little extra time for research/thinking before starting with the designs. BUT...the theme is:

Pre 1900's Daredevil. Anything before the 1900s is fair game, as long as it is still clear that it's Daredevil.

So... get to brainstormin'!
